Curacao Fun Facts

Colorful houses in Willemstad Curacao

Color

In the early 1800s, Governor-General Albert Kikkert supposedly suffered from migraine headaches. The doctor told him that this maybe due to the sun reflecting on the white paint of the buildings in Willemstad.

Albert issued a decree to paint the structure any color other than white. It is said that when Albert died it was found out that he had an ownership stake in the only paint factory on the island.

Canon-ball Church

So the story goes, the De Fortkerk church in downtown Willemstad was shelled in 1804 by the mutineers of the HMAV Bounty manned by British vice-admiral William Blighs. The mutiny on the Royal Navy vessel HMAV Bounty occurred in the South Pacific Ocean on 28 April 1789. The fleet arrived in Curacao - Supposedly, one of the canon balls is still proudly stuck in the fort’s church facade. Read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Bligh

Papiamentu

It is a new language: becoming the official language of Curacao in 2007. Its origin, however, dates back to 1630’s at the start of the island’s slave trade and was first spoken as creole between slaves and slave owners.

You can hear Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch influences in the language.

Aloe Vera

Cut the aloe and rub the flesh on your mosquito bites. It works wonders but why?

  1. Anti-inflammatory Magic: Aloe vera contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce swelling and redness associated with insect bites.

  2. Analgesic Magic: Aloe vera also contains compounds that have pain-relieving properties, which can help reduce itching and discomfort associated with mosquito bites.

  3. Moisturizing Magic: Aloe vera is a natural moisturizer that can help soothe dry and irritated skin, which is often a side effect of mosquito bites.

  4. Antibacterial Magic: Aloe vera has antibacterial properties, which can help prevent secondary infections from developing at the site of the bite.
